What to wear on a first date

Easy and unfussy beats overdressed and stiff: how to dress for a first date from your own pieces, and decide before Friday panic sets in.

The only rule: look like yourself on a good day

A first date outfit has one job: to look like you, dialled to a good day. Not a costume, not a statement, not the thing you bought for someone else's wedding. If they like the look, they should be liking you.

That points away from anything brand new. The pieces you already own and already feel good in are the honest raw material; the work is finding the combination of them that reads relaxed and a little deliberate at once.

Easy formulas, by venue

Drinks: a midi dress with personality (a print you love, a neckline you're comfortable in) and one casual counterweight, like flat sandals or a soft jacket. The polka-dot midi with a chain bag is the eternal version of this.

Dinner: swap the counterweight for polish. Same dress, better shoes, one ring. Restaurants forgive more effort than bars do.

Daytime coffee or a walk: trousers you can move in, a knit or blouse with some texture, sunglasses. Effort shows in the fabric, not the formality.

Kill the 19:00 panic

The classic failure mode is trying on five outfits while the clock runs, then leaving in the first one anyway, flustered. Decide earlier, in daylight, when you can actually judge.

With Sleqk you render your two or three candidate looks on your own photo the day before, compare them side by side, and lock one in. If you want a second opinion, one private link to a friend settles it. Friday evening starts calm.
