What to wear to a destination wedding

A destination wedding is not one outfit. It is a welcome dinner on Thursday, the ceremony and reception on Saturday, and a brunch or beach day on Sunday, with a flight on each end. The mistake is packing three unrelated looks and a shoe for each. The fix is one palette and pieces that talk to each other.

Pick two colours and one neutral. Every piece you pack belongs to that palette, so the Thursday dress works with the Sunday sandals and the Saturday bag goes with everything. Three outfits from six pieces is the goal.

Ceremony: your one real wedding dress, midi or long, in the strongest colour of the palette. This is the piece you do not compromise on. Roll it, do not fold it, and hang it in the bathroom while you shower on arrival.

Welcome dinner: a printed dress or tailored trousers with a silk top, one step more relaxed than the ceremony, in the second colour. Flats that survive cobblestones or sand.

Sunday: the printed dress again with different shoes, or the trousers with a knit. Nobody minds a repeat on the last day; they mind a fourth pair of shoes in your carry-on.

The flight: the neutral. Trousers, a knit, the flat shoes, the coat if the destination needs one. Wear the bulkiest pieces, pack the lightest.
