What to wear to a wedding as a guest
Joyful, not bridal, and comfortable past midnight: dressing for a wedding from pieces you already own, whatever the invitation says.
Decode the invitation, then relax
Wedding dress codes sound stricter than they are. Whatever the wording, the guest brief is always the same three things: joyful, not bridal, and comfortable enough to last from ceremony to dance floor. Leave white and near-white to the couple unless the invitation explicitly asks for it, and treat everything else as open.
Colour is the easiest way to look like you made an effort. A saturated pink, a deep green, a print with life in it: one confident colour reads celebratory in every photo, at every kind of venue, in a way safe beige never will.
The guest formula
Base: one dress that makes you stand differently. A fuchsia halter with a sculpted rose is the archetype: festive on its own, so everything else can be quiet.
Counterweights: a light neutral bag and one pair of shoes you have already danced in. New shoes at a wedding is a bet you lose by 22:00.
Layer: ceremonies run cold and terraces run late. A wrap or a soft blazer that agrees with the dress saves the evening without ruining the silhouette.
Decide the week before, not the morning of
