What to wear to a fall wedding

Summer weddings fight you with heat and winter weddings fight you with coats. Fall gives you the one thing a guest outfit needs: a reason for sleeves. A long-sleeve dress in a deep colour does the whole job, looks intentional in every photo, and keeps you warm through a ceremony under trees.

Colour does the celebrating. Emerald, burgundy, rust, plum, navy: pick one saturated shade and let it be the only loud thing you wear. Black is allowed at an evening wedding, but a colour reads warmer against turning leaves and golden light.

Base: one dress with sleeves and some movement in the skirt. An emerald long-sleeve with a flared hem is the archetype. Midi or mini both work; the sleeves are what make it autumn.

Feet: a block heel or a strappy heel you have already danced in. If the ceremony is on grass, a wider heel keeps you out of the lawn. Gold or metallic shoes lift a dark dress without adding a second colour.
