What to wear to Thanksgiving dinner

Thanksgiving is rarely just dinner. It is a drive or a flight, an afternoon in a warm kitchen, a long meal, then the sofa. The outfit has to look good at four and still feel good at nine.

That rules out two things. Anything tight at the waist, because you will be eating for hours. And anything you would worry about near gravy or a toddler.

Base: a long-sleeve midi dress with some movement, or soft trousers with a fine knit. A print hides the odd splash better than a pale plain colour does.

Waist: a belt you can loosen, or no belt at all. An elastic or drawstring waist under a long knit looks as polished as a tailored one.

Feet: flats or low boots. You will stand in the kitchen and walk to the car with leftovers. A red flat adds the festive touch without a heel.

Layer: a cardigan or a light jacket. Houses run hot when the oven has been on all day, and cold when someone opens the door to the yard.

If you are travelling, the outfit has to fit in the bag with everything else. Pick it before you pack, not the morning of.
